Illustrative calculator — leverage multiples are generic industry-style approximations (actual F&O margin depends on SPAN + exposure margin, which changes daily), not Investeria's actual margin requirements. Confirm exact figures before placing a real order.
Margin, explained
What is margin?
The portion of a position's value you must deposit upfront to take the trade — the rest is exposure your broker allows based on the segment's leverage rules.
Why does leverage vary by segment?
Delivery equity requires full payment (1x), while intraday and futures positions allow higher leverage since they're squared off same-day or hedged against SPAN margin rules.
Why is buying options different?
When you buy an option, your maximum loss is the premium paid — so the margin required is simply the full premium, with no additional leverage.
Why is selling (writing) options riskier?
Option writers carry theoretically unlimited risk, so exchanges require SPAN + exposure margin similar to futures — shown here as an approximate leverage multiple.
